The RCMP says, all in all, highway drivers were fairly well behaved this Canada Day long weekend.
Chris Little, with Strathcona Integrated Traffic Services, says they were forced to send out a large number of members, due to heavy volumes of traffic.
“I haven’t seen quite that amount of traffic in a while. Especially on the Friday and the holiday Monday, traffic volumes were extremely heavy. We did quite a bit of enforcement, but all in all, especially in our jurisdiction and around the Edmonton capital region, traffic was fairly well behaved.”
Little says speed however continues to be a concern.
One driver was clocked going 205 kilometers per hour between Spruce Grove and Edmonton. That’s 100 kilometers over the speed limit.
Little says their traffic unit wrote around 600 tickets on just the Friday and Monday, but when you take in to consideration how many people were on the highways this past weekend, I'd say things went well. (bu)
