At 11pm sharp Canada Day the sky will light up over Mill Woods and the North Saskatchewan River.

Fireworks will be blasted into the sky to celebrate Canada Day and Julie Stormer, festival and events liaison with the city, says the fireworks celebrations in the capital are said to be the biggest west of Ottawa.

"There's lots of things for people to do, stuff going on at Borden Park as well but of course the big event is at the very end of course is fireworks."

She has some suggestions for viewing locations.

"Some great view locations are Ezio Faraone Park or the Legislature, Victoria Park across the river of course and Telus Field is also opening their doors up after the baseball game so people can enjoy the fireworks show from their as well," explains Stormer.

Stormer says Edmontonians watch the fireworks on the river from all over the capital and it is unclear how many will be watching but she expects thousands will tilt their heads skyward.

"Certainly I think that it is something that a lot of Edmontonians are excited about and they come out in droves," explains Stormer. "I don't have an exact number because there is people everywhere. People on Whyte Avenue obviously, River Valley Road and I don't think we have an estimate on number but certainly lots of Edmontonians appreciate it and do come out for it."

Stormer says the show is expected to light up the sky for about 15 minutes.

About 50 thousand people are expected to cram into the city's southeast for Canada celebrations.

There are events going all day, culminating with fireworks at 11pm sharp, same as the show over the North Saskatchewan River

"We're looking at probably a 13.5 minute show," explains Begdahl.

Bergdahl says there's one big difference between their celebration and the one downtown.

"There is little bits of activity spread over a large area," explains Bergdahl. "There's nothing where a family can go to one place to take in a bunch of activities."

He adds you are much more likely to find a seat and parking if you attend the Millwoods show.
