Edmonton is following a country-wide trend of decreasing crime.
New numbers from Stats Canada show that the crime rate in our city dropped by 2% from 2011 to 2012, close to the nation's average of 3%.
The severity of the crimes is also going down, the city's severity index dropped three points to 85. However, that still puts Edmonton in 26th spot out of the 33 cities surveyed.
Stats Canada says the type of crime that happens is also changing. Police dealt with more identity fraud throughout 2012. The number of marijuana busts dropped, but there was an increase in crimes involving other drugs. (kdr)
