The Alberta NDP says it's received confirmation that the Capital Region Housing Corporation has lowered its maximum rental subsidy for low income earners.
Municipal Affairs critic Deron Bilous says the $550 per month subsidy has dropped to $500 per month as of the beginning of May, 2013.
He says this is going to have a massive ripple effect on those who can barely afford rent as it is.
"Losing that $50 a month is going to have a significant impact on (low income earners) and their families, and it's going to put them in a position where they're going to have to make some tough choices."
Those that rely on the subsidy often make less than $30 thousand a year.
"When you take away an extra $50 per month and that makes a significant impact, because as it is, they're already making selective choices on what they can purchase for food, while making use of services like the Edmonton Food Bank."
Bilous is calling on the Redford government to intervene and stop the cuts, claiming its a low cost to them, that has a major impact on those losing money. (lk)
