The decision to amalgamate home care in the province has been partially reversed.

The decision put in place back on June 1st by Alberta Health Services (AHS) reduced home care service providers in Alberta from 42 to 13 in an effort to streamline the system and save the AHS $18 million.

The decision was met with resistance causing Health Minister Fred Horne to order a review of the changes and now a number of those home care providers will be offered new contracts.

The changes apply only here in Edmonton and it affects mostly congregate facilities.

Health Minister Fred Horne Tells Global News why these changes will be so beneficial to patient care.

"These additional providers will help make sure that as much as possible people get their care from the same staff that they know and that care for them every day" says Horne.

Details of the contract have not been disclosed but officials say the AHS is still on track to save the $18 million projected from the amalgamation in June.

The facilities receiving new contracts include:

-The Alberta Lifecare Housing Foundation

-All Seniors Care Living Ltd.

-Christenson Communities Ltd

-Venta Nursing Home Ltd

-West Surgeon Aging in Place Foundation.  (JSL/QR77)
