More details are trickling in about the deplorable conditions animals were living in at a North Edmonton facility.

47 dogs and 6 cats were removed from the animal care business known as BARK after police and animal care received numerous complaints.

An environmental health official says just walking through the building she noticed a long list of violations.

Rebecca Johnson an Environmental Health Officer with the AHS tells Global News why shutting down the facility was the right move.

"Closing it for tenant accommodation purposes was certainly an easy decision based on the conditions at the time of inspection" says Johnson.

Johnson says there were numerous violations including urine and feces in the upstairs hallway, along with rotting meat in an unplugged freezer and no working smoke alarms.

Animal control says some animals seized are still being treated but they're still waiting for owners to claim the other 37 dogs and 7 cats.  (JSL/Global)
